Description Jorge Salinas 2001-10-18 19:19:15 UTC
Package: Evolution
Priority: Normal
Version: 0.16.99
Synopsis: Hide read messages doesnt work....
Bugzilla-Product: Evolution
Bugzilla-Component: Mailer

Description:
when there are already read messages and i select Hide read
messages...it works...but...if i download new messages...i read
them...then i go to another folder and i go back to the original
folder...the already message is not hided...I think "Hide read messages"
must be permanent and not only a temporal "filter"...

Comment 1 Luis Villa 2001-10-25 13:49:34 UTC
Hrm. I'm not sure if this is intentional or not. If not intentional,
should be a trivial fix, right, guys?
Comment 2 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-10-25 18:24:51 UTC
it's not a toggle, it's an operation.

thus... NOTABUG
Comment 3 Luis Villa 2001-10-29 17:04:31 UTC
Hrm. I'd like to see Anna test this at some point for what people
expect. I don't really think of it as a one-time action, but that's
just my gut instinct.
Comment 4 Luis Villa 2001-10-29 17:08:42 UTC
It was pointed out by the filer in IRC that hide deleted messages does
/not/ work this way, and the 'hide X messages' switches should be
consistent. I tend to agree with this- I'm not sure that this
shouldn't be a toggle, but it should at least be consistent throughout
the app.
Comment 5 Luis Villa 2001-11-26 17:03:43 UTC
Because of the decision to remap 1.1->1.2 and 1.2->1.4, I'm going to be
moving a large number of bugs around in the bugzilla. You can just
search on 'body contains' 'Because of the decision to remap' and mark
all as read. Please direct all questions about this change to
evolution@ximian.com, not the bug.

*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 209461 ***
Comment 7 Ettore Perazzoli 2001-11-26 19:41:01 UTC
It *is* a one-time action, and that's the way it has always supposed
to be.
Comment 8 Anna Marie Dirks 2001-11-26 19:42:45 UTC
Aackj! Sorry, this isn't a duplicate. I was trying to look
at bug 209461, not mark it as a duplicate of this one.

Sorry again, Anna
Comment 9 Jorge Salinas 2001-11-26 19:58:40 UTC
about what ettore said...i don't agree with you...if i want to hide
the read messages...i would like to hide every message that i read...i
think it's not logical to do it every time...and , if it was like
that, so when u select show hidden messages, that should happens just
once...and that doesn't happen...every time u start evo, the "hidden"
messages are showed...

sorry about my english...
Comment 10 Ettore Perazzoli 2001-11-26 20:10:16 UTC
Sorry, this is just the way the feature is supposed to work.
Comment 11 Jorge Salinas 2001-11-27 12:36:50 UTC
dude, i'm not saying that isn't the way that the feature is supposed
to work...u "create" it...and u wanted it to work like that...I'm
saying that I think that is not the correct behavior....why?...cause
i've used a lot of software, in Linux, in Windows, In MacOs..etc...and
not only Mail readers...News readers, and other things...and I tell
u...when u select "Hide read messages"...and u read a new one, that
message in the future will be hidden...because "you wanted that all
messages that you've already read be hidden"...cause u select "Hide
read messages".......and that's why i told u about the "Show hidden
messages"...i think u have to be consistent...if u show the hidden
messages "all the time" when u select "Show hidden messages"...u
should hide messages "all the time" when u select "Hide read messages"...

I dont want to discuss with u, really, but i wasn't happy with ur
answer...=)
Comment 12 Luis Villa 2001-11-27 16:33:17 UTC
Then the feature works incorrectly, ettore. It's extremely
inconsistent. Anna, your thoughts, please?
Comment 13 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-12-06 01:44:17 UTC
marking as 1 day, but maybe I should mark as 6 months since that's how
long it will take to settle the disagreement over what the behavior
should be :-)

I personally agree with ettore, but maybe the menu name should be
changed so there wouldn't be any confusion or something.
Comment 14 Jorge Salinas 2001-12-06 12:18:05 UTC
Ok...let say that is a "name" mistake...so, in that case, i think it
would be good to have an option to hide the already read
messages...for ever, until u select an option to "Show hidden messages"...
This is like every News reader (at least the news reader I've used)
behavior, if u read a message, and u hide the read message, that one
won't appear anymore, until u decide it...what i think it's a good
behavior, cause u can maintain some kind of order...=)

cheers..=)
Comment 15 Not Zed 2001-12-08 01:36:25 UTC
the reason it can't work this way is that as soon as you click on it,
it becomes 'read', and suddenly it vanishes from the list, and because
its no longer in the list, vanishes from the message display.

i.e. the feature makes the mailer compoletely unusable.

If you want this feature, use a vfolder of unread messages.

Second, i think message hiding should be completely removed. Its a
crap feature that never worked the way anyone wanted it to.

Comment 16 Jorge Salinas 2001-12-08 14:42:08 UTC
Then, the "hide read messages" has to work in another moment...i mean,
when u focus on one folder, you read the messages and then u select
another folder, in that moment the "hide read messages" action should
be done... so, it's not a "message" property, it's a folder property.
If u have used any kind of News reader (Pan, tin, trn...etc), whn u
have selected "hide read messages" and u read a message, it doesnt
dissapear inmediatly, it hides when u go out from the channel...i
would say this is the correct behavior...
Comment 17 Luis Villa 2001-12-12 23:39:37 UTC
I'd be perfectly happy with removing hide read messages, especially
now that we have a default Unread vfolder.
Comment 18 Ettore Perazzoli 2001-12-12 23:53:38 UTC
Not going to happen.
Comment 19 Jeffrey Stedfast 2002-05-28 22:40:06 UTC
not going to change so closing.
