Notification icons should support having a transparent background.  See the work
that went into gnome-applets 2.9.2.

I'm running 0.8.8 and not HEAD.  gismo from #rhythmbox compiled
rhythmbox-0.9-patch-159 from arch and had the same result.

I don't think this is specific to Rhythmbox. I think it applies to the
notification area in general. See the attached screenshot (with Gaim and
Liferea icons in the notification area).
