GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 141449
reuse gst-rec listboxes in gstreamer-properties ([audio/video]-[sink/src])
Last modified: 2006-07-08 18:52:37 UTC
it's a reminder for ronald (i already talked to him about this) the idea is to replace the 4 current listboxes by their equivalent in gst-recorder properties. gst-recorder one also provides all v4l & alsa devices, not just the default one far few people would have to enter a custom value.

If I've understood this bug properly, I've run into it too. The current "Multimedia Selector" capplet lets the user choose between source and sink plugins (something the 'normal' user probably doesn't care about). However, the only way to chose anything but the system's default device on the default soundcard is to understand enough about gstreamer to add the requisite options to a custom source or sink line. The important thing in the common case is for users with multiple output devices be presented with a listbox to choose their output device, and that those options use human-readable strings, not raw device names. "Plantronics Headset" not "hw:3,0" or "/dev/dsp3". Ideally this same information should be available in gconf so even non-gstreamer applications (like for example esd) can access it.
