Whenever I try to change the font for the text tool, it crashes as I scroll down
the list.  A command prompt window opens, but it closes before I can see. 
Always happens right after I scroll past Verdana Italic.  Don't know what's
after that.

This looks like a duplicate of bug #101856. Please tell us if the ugly
workaround mentioned in bug #137550 (deleting the font cache before each
execution of gimp) works for you. It could be also a duplicate of bug #120095
but it looks rather 101856ish.

Ok, I tried the solution for 137550, and it still crashed but left an error
window.  Based on it, the bug seems to be a duplicate of 101856.  Here's a
screenshot of the window:
