[UI-REVIEW] Make statusbar information less verbose
Last modified: 2021-06-02 09:07:17 UTC
According to the HIG[1], the statusbar should be used to "display brief information about the status of the application". In addition, it shouldn't be relied upon for conveying important information to the user. I think the information the statusbar of gucharmap currently displays when selecting a character can not exactly be described as "brief" ;) What I would suggest is to display something like the following: "NAME OF CHAR" selected For example: "LATIN SMALL LETTER SHARP S" selected At a maximum I think that either the Unicode number *or* a comma separated list of alternative names could be appended in parentheses (*not* falling back to unicode if no alternative names are available in the latter case). In my opinion, the specific information it shows currently is very important. I would be willing to move it off the statusbar if you can suggest a better place for it. The unique thing about the statusbar that I need is that text that goes off the end is simply cut off. However, it would be nice to have the statusbar available to show other types of messages.
But all the information that is currently shown in the statusbar is also already available on the Character Details tab, isn't it?
Yes it is. I think it's important for users to see it when they're navigating the charmap.
Noah, what do you think about the ui-change suggested with bug 130618 (i.e. the one about moving the character details from the current tab to a switchable pane like in gnome-process-monitor)? With such a change it would be possible for users that need it to browse the character list while viewing the details and it wouldn't obscure the interface too much for users that don't need to see them.
I added some comments to bug 130618.
How would you feel about two statusbars adjacent to each other? | Found. | U+0623 ARABIC LETTER ALEF WITH HAMZA ABOVE |
Apologies for spam - I've made a mockup at bug 130638 which also fixes this bug by removing the statusbar.
Re-assign to default owner and QA.
