Description Lars Weber 2004-01-05 07:57:02 UTC
[ Creating a new bug as suggested in bug #107965; the following is copied
from there. ]

Just wondered whether it wouldn't be better to just make gucharmap
*always* display rows with the number of characters inside a power of two.

Pros:
o One potentially confusing menu item less.
o Problem of original bug-report fixed for everyone without the need
for a special setting.
o Easier to find characters after resizing the window (since
characters do not change position so much).

Cons:
o Number of characters displayed less optimized than it could be.

I personally don't consider the negative aspect to be so serious...
other people may disagree however :)

In the near future the characters in the character table won't
necessarily be structured as they are now, and the powers of two will
be almost meaningless.

In addition, the non-power-of-two snapping is one of my favorite
things about gucharmap. :-)

Take a look again once I commit the coming changes, and if you still
feel the same way you can reopen the bug.
