Description Mark Finlay 2003-11-02 16:29:55 UTC
Libgnomesu is a library in gnome cvs that has been written to be a secure
portable way to run programs as root. I would recommend using it for the
gdmsetup for Gnome 2.6.

Hi,

I would like to know what is the actual status of this bug:

Is libgnomesu still the prefered way to get root privileges when running
gdmsetup? I ask this, because libgnomesu is not in the official gnome releases.
And e.g. gnome-system-tools have an own implementation..

Or are there any other plans for a common implementation for all gnome tools for
getting root privileges?

Best regards,
Christian

To be honest, I'm not sure what the best mechanism should be. Some guidance
would be useful. Note that this bug relates to bug 164786 which states that
the GUI front-end should not be run as root. Perhaps these two issues should be
addressed together. In other words, it might make sense to run the GUI as the
end-user and have it interact with the daemon to change the GDM configuration.
Perhaps it should also (similar to gdmlogin and gdmgreeter) authenticate the
root password.

I'm marking this bug as a duplicate of 164786 since it makes more sense to fix
the problem that way, then by using libgnomesu.
