GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 11763
add panel contents to main menu
Last modified: 2020-11-07 12:14:56 UTC
Package: panel Version: 1.1.90 Severity: wishlist it would be nice to have the option of having a submenu in the main gnome menu that listed all the panels in use and their contents. sort of like the "Personal Toolbar Folder" in Netscape Navigator. the main problem i see with this RFE is the handling of applets. launchers and drawers would work fine, though. -md ------- Bug moved to this database by debbugs-export@bugzilla.gnome.org 2001-01-27 13:10 ------- This bug was previously known as bug 11763 at http://bugs.gnome.org/ http://bugs.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11763 Originally filed under the gnome-core product and panel component. Move to gnome-panel?
Btw, adding new applets into gnome-panel is pretty hard for most users, because not everybody thinks about right mouse click (for example lots of Apple computer users never use right-click). I think Gnome should have posibillity to create and remove panels and add/remove panel applets without clicking right mouse button. There was such possibility in Gnome 1.4, why developers removed this usefull feature ?
It seems "Add to Panel" and "New Panel" could be added to Actions menu - because now only experienced users can add new items to panel or create new panels :( Btw, some people already reported this idea, look at bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68469
Context menu for adding items to panel is unusable for most newbies, look at Gnome Usability Test: http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/ut1_pres/text21.htm Testers asked users to add a clock to their system: o Specified that it had to show date and time o Didn't use word "panel", just that it had to appear beside other icons at bottom of screen results: * 1 user went directly to panel and completed task successfully * 8 users looked in the Settings menu * 3 users looked in the Control Center * One user, familiar with context menus, searched for 10 minutes before thinking to right- click on the panel And we still call Gnome Desktop user-friendly after this ?
We could create an applet to do this :-)
interesting idea, I looking to change the applets 'add to panel' dialog into a check on/off instead of the weird conglomeration that it is now. This would probably handle this issue, applets and launchers that exist would be checked on or off weather they exist on the panel or not.
Vincent, if we make an applet for adding/removing applets and other panel operations then this applet should be in gnome panel as default. Bryan, I think it's a good and user-friendly idea to make checkboxes for adding/removing applets and launchers. This will increase gnome usability. But the main problem is, that most users currently don't find how to add applets to the panel (launchers can be added with drag&drop from Applications menu or from desktop, but where to find applets?).
Bryan: how would I be able to have two trash applets?
(Bryan was not in the cc field)
Mantas: Yes, I hesitate to say that Applets could be added as a preference menu item since we're trying to cut down on those. Perhaps when we merge Backgrounds, Fonts, Themes, and Screensaver would we be ok in adding an Applets capplet which would really just launch the Add To Panel dialog. Not sure about that solution though. Vincent: No, multiple applets would have to be handled in the applet itself or maybe some other method. I guess on xinerma you might want multiple trash applets, but otherwise I'm not sure why one well placed one isn't better. Anyway most applets are a single use applet and the few others like the weather applet can be modified to handle weather for different locations in the same applet.
The problem of needing to right-click still exists as of Fedora 7. See also Bug 172939.
bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old feature requests in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years. If you still use gnome-panel and if you are still requesting this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-panel/-/issues/ Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be implemented.
