GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 116128
rfe: add a little usage information for gnome-default-applications-properties
Last modified: 2011-09-09 10:10:20 UTC
control-center-2.2.2-1 rawhide-release-20030621-1 gnome-default-applications-properties When defining a custom web browser, user needs to know that "%s" means the URL, for example "links %s". In some cases the command line is empty, and user has no way of guessing what to put in the line in correct format. There should be some little help text shown, like: "eg. '/usr/bin/epiphany %s'"
Is this not in the documentation?
Who reads the documentation for things this simple? User might think that just the name of the browser is enough, like "mozilla", while it requires the command of the browser *and* using the "%s". And the documentation does not seem to be installed by default in RedHat 8 (should it?): "help document ...verylongname.xml not found".

Reassigning preferred applications bugs into the component that, for some reason, didn't exist until now. Filter for "Andrew doing reassignment work" to get rid of this e-mail spam.
Updating the version, and confirming the format string it's in the documentation.
What would be nice for this? A label on the window? A tooltpi?
The new applet has a tooltip on custom command entries. If having a tooltip is good enough, I think the bug can be marked as RESOLVED.
Are there still problems with this? If not, the bug can finally be marked as RESOLVED.
I'd prefer to see the text in small italic font under the text field, as is more usual for text field 'prompts' in GNOME. Not everyone looks for tooltips, especially on text boxes.
I can agree with you about text entries tooltips, but I have two observations. - The custom entry filed is repeated several times (one for every category). Should the explanation text be repeated too? - It is quite uncommon for a user to write its own custom command to launch an application, he/she will probably just select an item from the list.

Yes, I would think so. > It is quite uncommon for a user to write its own custom command to launch an > application, he/she will probably just select an item from the list. True; perhaps the "Custom" options would be better hidden in a GtkExpander widget or something, but that would need a more significant redesign.
Would the solution in bug 592509 resolve this bug? Calum, could you comment on the suggestions there too?
The "Preferred Applications" capplet is now gone in GNOME 3, and most of its code was rewritten. If you experience problems using the "System Info" panel in GNOME 3's system settings, please file a new bug.
