Mockup of how it should look

This mockup demonstrates small changes to the Preferred Applications window.

* Removed repeated use of "Open link in" from UI for defining link-opening
behavior.
* Removed the custom command UI from the window. The label "Custom," inactive
text entry, and inactive checkbox with label "Run in terminal" add a lot of
complexity, duplication, and distraction to the window.
* Added "Custom..." entry to the application combo boxes. Choosing custom shows
a "Custom Command" dialog, where the user has more room to enter a custom
command, and choose whether to run in a terminal.

These changes allow the application to be more friendly to beginning users, and
still retain the power that some users require.

I'm not sure showing "xxx %s" as the label for the command really is an improvement. I'm not sure I agree with the perceived problems of the current dialog, either, for that matter.

Daniel, can you explain a bit more about why replacing the "Custom" entries with popup windows is more user friendly?
Comment 4 Bastien Nocera 2010-12-08 12:20:02 UTC
"Open links in" is gone, and so is the "custom" choice.

I'm really not sure how using a text entry instead of a drop-down of choices was a usability gain anyway.
