GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 114013
clicking the gedit icon should open a new gedit window and not move an existing one from another workspace.

Just filed similar bug against epiphany (see: bug #114012) and it relates to gedit too: Clicking on the gedit icon when a gedit window already exists should open a new window and not move the current window from another workspace. There's a number of issues with this behaviour. It makes opening a second window on another workspace very awkward. Effectively, I have to open a new window, drag it to the new workspace and then move to the new workspace. This is unintuitive. If I move to another workspace, I expect a new instance, not move a window from another workspace. The analogy of the workspace is important in this. I do one thing in one workspace, and other things in others. In this same way, I want a text editor window for each individual task, and don't expect a text editor from another task to invade the new tasks space and create confusion over what work is being done where. Clicking on a launcher should launch a new instance, and not move another instance.
I thought the same thing. See bug 102894.
Aldug, I'm with you. This is a bug. If I want to use the same window on another workspace I can drag the window to the new workspace. i shouldn't however (and especially considering the connatations of the workspace paradigm) have to use work arounds to create a new window in a separate work space.
It's probably worth mentioning that the ephiphany guys see this as bad behaviour and have fixed it.
Could you try to change your gedit.dekstop file so that it runs "gedit --new-window" and lemme know if the new behavior satisfies you?
I've made the change and given it a quick try and it seems to do what I would expect.
