Description John Costigan 2003-04-30 23:17:50 UTC
The Gnome 1.4 tasklist had a preference to set the size of individual items
in the tasklist, as well as to limit the size of the entire tasklist. In
2.x, the latter preference has remained, while the former preference was
dropped.

I am requesting functionality be added to limit the size of Window List
Items (as opposed to limiting the size of the Window List itself, which is
already implemented).

Currently, if there are 6 items in the window list, and the window to which
one of the items refers has a title that is much longer than the others,
all of the Window List Items are huge. This makes some of the Window List
Items (that have small window titles) look a little rediculous. If there
were a preference to limit the maximum width of the Window List Items, then
this effect could be limited.

If all of the windows have small titles, then the Window List Items become
very small, perhaps too small for some people's tastes. A preference to
limit the minimum width of a Window List Item could eliminate this effect.

Setting the two preferences to the same number could be used to specify an
exact width for each of the Window List items, no matter how small or how
large their window titles are.

When conflicts arise between Window List Item minimum widths and Window
List minimum widths (or their maximum counterparts), the Window List widths
should override the Window List Item widths.

Personally (and this is just my opinion), I prefer a fixed Window List Item
size, especially when my terminal (whose window title changes often) is
very active. Adding these two preferences (one to limit the minimum size
of a Window List Item, and one to limit the maximum size of a Window List
Item) would implement this behavior as well as other, more dynamic behaviors.

Feature request -> setting GNOMEVER2.3 keyword.

yes please!

The keywords need to be updated; 2.3 has been released.

This is exactly what bothers me so much, when you look at other
windowmanagers/osses you can see that the size of a item isn't related to the
name of the item (kde does that, windows also). I think it's better that way
since it looks much cleaner, it's always the same size...
Well, since it has been more then half a year since the last reaction on this
bug, and gnome 2.8 is coming soon, is it possible to fix this bug?

*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 155870 ***
Comment 6 Keith Lea 2005-01-24 19:11:14 UTC
I don't know if this is a duplicate. Bug 155870 talks about setting a max width;
this one is about making that an option in preferences.
