GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 648000
Keyboard shortcuts for dash items
Last modified: 2019-02-06 21:51:25 UTC
I'd like to suggest something akin to Unity's keyboard shortcuts for the dash. Being able to hit meta to bring up activities and then something along the lines of alt-1/2/3/4 etc to launch or focus one of the icons in the dash would be a great time saver when using keyboard navigation. Combined with keyboard access to the notification area (which I see there's already a bug for) I think this could really speed up navigation on laptops, as working with a touchpad is a bit painful currently. Apologies if there's already a bug for this. I did search around but couldn't find anything, but then I tend to have issues finding bugs in Bugzilla...
I agree. This Alt-n shortcut is the thing I prefer in Unity. It's simple and fast.

for anyone interested, using super+n to activate or super+shift+n to start new instance is implemented as extension (https://github.com/franziskuskiefer/app-keys-gnome-shell-extension). However, integration into gnome-shell itself would be nicer :)
I concur. When the desktop is open, it should be one visit to the keyboard or mouse to activate a favorite application on the activities bar. This is a major advantage of Unity over Gnome. As it currently stands, one needs to mouse click more than once to get to a favorite application, and there is no keyboard shortcut. This should be integrated, as F. Kiefer has stated. Also in Unity, the most important keyboard shortcuts can be seen by pressing and holding the SUPER key. This aids tremendously when learning the shortcuts. With Gnome, I always have to find the keyboard shortcuts webpage using a search engine.
