GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 510763
Epiphany doesn't fetches /favicon.ico as site favicon automatically
Last modified: 2010-01-29 17:37:47 UTC
Please describe the problem: i've noticed that some sites, that with firefox have a favicon, when saved in epiphany bookmarks don't have a favicon... Steps to reproduce: examples 1. http://www.ebay.it/ 2. http://www.hwupgrade.it/ 3. http://chatta.it/ Actual results: epiphany dont recognize the favicon Expected results: that a favicon is showed Does this happen every time? yes, also deleting and re-adding the site Other information:
By default, Epiphany doesn't load some types of favicon that don't adhere to the standard. You can enable the Favicon extension to load the non-standard favicons as well. Please see http://live.gnome.org/Epiphany/ThirdPartyExtensions. Can you tell us if that solves your problem?
i've found only awn favicon but is't for my problem... maybe i've must recompile epiphayny with some library? anyway why i cant find extension for my version on epiphany?
The Python 'window icon' extension found here: http://www.gnome.org/~chpe/extensions/ will work on any reasonably recent version of Epiphany. Copy window-icon.* to ~/.gnome2/epiphany/extensions and you should be able to enable it from Tools > Extensions.
i've put this file in extension directory but in epiphany don't appear extension voice... maybe i've must compile someting?
No, you don't need to compile anything for Python extensions. If you followed the instructions I gave in comment #3 then there will be a "Window Icon" entry in the Extensions Manager that you can enable.
i dont have an exension manager in my epiphany :)
Then please install the epiphany-extensions package.
i've compiled from source the 2.21.4 version but i don't find the same version extensions...
Oh, I understand. Epiphany-extensions isn't made compatible with the changes in the 2.21.x series yet so currently there is no 2.21 release. However, I don't know if this limitation is also valid for a simple Python extension. Can you try to start gconf-editor and add the string 'window-icon' to the key /apps/epiphany/general/active_extensions?
no, the menu dont appear, anyway when the new extension will be released? gnome 2.22 it's coming...
I didn't say that a menu would appear. What I would like to know is if there is any change in favicon behaviour after you change that gconf key. If you'd like to offer assistance in porting epiphany-extensions to 2.22, please feel free to do so. :-)
mmm no.. no change... also the favicon of google are not recognized...
ok, so we'll leave this bug pending the release of epiphany-extensions 2.21/2.22.
K i'm also waiting for ad-block :) is essential :) anyway good work!
The example sites don't link to the favicon but just have a file in /favicon.ico. I don't know if this should go into webkit itself... we can easily implement it in Epiphany.
I get favicons on all three of those sites with epiphany 2.29.5 and webkit 1.18+... I have a feeling the fixes for https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=601859 and the corresponding change in webkit that #601859 uses covered this.
Automatic fetch of /favicon.ico doesn't work for me. The reporter example sites exhibit this problem, we have to decide if we implement fetching /favicon.ico ourselves or in webkit. Probably doing it ourselves makes the most sense since it's not a standard thing... Xan? Gustavo?
Diego: Really? What version of epiphany and webit are you using?
So I found out that my webkit was build with --disable-icon-database and apparently that kills favicons... Go figure. I can't reproduce. I understand this was already solved then. Closing again.
