GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 45550
sidebar icon should offer context menu, drag target, drop target
Last modified: 2011-08-18 21:01:00 UTC
The sidebar displays an icon representing the window's current context. At least, it *looks* like an icon. But it's not really an icon: it's a picture of an icon with none of the associated behaviors. The sidebar icon should behave more like a real icon. In particular, it should offer the following three behaviors: 1. Right mouse clicking on the sidebar icon should bring up the same context menu one would expect to see if right clicking on the corresponding icon in the main view area of the parent folder. 2. Dropping other files' icons onto the sidebar icon should be equivalent to dropping them on the corresponding icon in the main view area of the parent folder. 3. Dragging the sidebar icon should be equivalent to dragging the corresponding icon in the main view area of the parent folder. Note that the last of these is an extremely conventient way to delete folders. You view the folder's contents, decide that there is nothing of interest, and immediately drag the sidebar icon itself to the Trash. This is rather more conventient than what one must do currently: click "Up", look around for the proper subfolder icon, and only then drag it to the Trash. In all honesty, I must admit that this is not an original concept. I know that Windows ME does this, and I'm pretty sure that Windows 2000 does as well. It's mightly convenient. ------- Additional Comments From andy@eazel.com 2001-01-09 22:51:32 ---- I agree with most of this, but we won't have time to do it until after 1.0. ------- Additional Comments From eli@eazel.com 2001-02-09 11:35:30 ---- Duane is now the proud new QA owner of 'Sidebar', and 'Sidebar Panel: (Other)'. ------- Additional Comments From eli@eazel.com 2001-03-26 11:07:51 ---- QA Assigning to self. ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2001-09-09 20:51 -------

Sidebar only offers "Places" and "Tree" anymore in 3.1.4, plus the icon mentioned in this report seems to not exist anymore (as the complete header line design has changed). Closing as OBSOLETE but please reopen if I misunderstood something and if this is still valid in 3.0/3.1.
