Thanks for the bug report. Unfortunately, that stack trace is not very useful in determining the cause of the crash. Can you get us one with debugging symbols? Please see http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information on how to do so.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Unfortunately, that stack trace is missing some elements that will help a lot to solve the problem, so it will be hard for the developers to fix that crash. Can you get us a stack trace with debugging symbols? Please see http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information on how to do so. Thanks in advance! please install the libc and nautilus debugging packages, trigger the crash and post the resulting trace as an attachment to this report.

Thanks everybody for taking the time to report this bug. That stack trace is missing some elements that will help a lot to solve the problem, so it will be hard for the developers to fix that crash. all the crashes i have had so far seem to happen when i am playing around trying to get into my Samba share on my FC4 samba server. I can get in no problem with NO authentication in the gui desktop. I canNOT get in with authentication in the gui. however if i use the terminal i can get in with authentication.all my crashes are while using samba in some way. I have all my musci on there and i kept getting crashing trying to import the music into rythum box as i have done since in FC4 and FC5.

In tha last duplicate the reporter was trying to set permissions on a shared NTFS drive to R/W changing permissions on a remote folder of non-Unix style seems to be one way to trigger this. Folks, please, we need your help. Please install debugging symbols as mentioned in coment #16

Please, do not open new reports when there is already a report filed - this is futile. Instead, copy&paste the trace bug-buddy outputs and paste it *as an attachment* to this report. Thank you for your effort. If http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces looks like rocket science to you we'd be happy to make it clearer. Just file a bug for the bugzilla.gnome.org product.
Created attachment 76851 [details] Nautilus error Christian, let me know if I did this correctly. THanks John
(In reply to comment #39) > *** Bug 376852 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** [I hope I am doing this corectly!] thanks for all your efforts guys! I figured I'd try and give what little extra info that I could - I'm a <total> newbie when it comes to FC6 & Linux in general. What I was doing was trying to get a secondary HD into service on my 'new' box... this HD has 4 NTFS partitions/drives on it. I was logged in as 'root' I have been able to get all 4 of them to share out to a WinXP Home box. The problem I was having is that all 4 seem to be stuck as R-X - no write capability. I was trying every which way to get this in effect when I got the crashes. The lines in the FSTab configuration file went like this: /dev/hdd7 /lancelot vfat defaults 1 1 /dev/hdd8 /merlin vfat defaults 1 1 /dev/hdd5 /longboat vfat defaults 1 1 /dev/hdd6 /igraine vfat defaults 1 1 In MTab they show up as this: /dev/hdd7 /lancelot vfat rw 0 0 /dev/hdd8 /merlin vfat rw 0 0 /dev/hdd5 /longboat vfat rw 0 0 /dev/hdd6 /igraine vfat rw 0 0 I have even used Terminal to manually try setting permissions. I've run chmod -R -v o+rwx /merlin and seen the (-v)reports saying that the permissions are showing as 'rwxrwxrwx' when I run ls -l immediately thereafter I get the report back that the file permissions are 'rwxr-xr-x' Also when I try to write anything to the drives from the XP machine I get a 'Access denied' error. Im using the Samba server/SWAT which I added with add/remove programs and that doesn't seem to be able to run 'SWAT'-even though it is supposedly installed- I'm thinking about pulling down the source files for that and attempting to compile/install it that way. Hopefully this info helps. As I said I'm a newbie so I'm kinda running blind on this one. Thanks again!
jv4nu@cox.net : unforunately your attached trace is even worse. you may want to drop by our irc channel #bugs on irc.gnome.org and ask for help obtaining a good trace. alternatively you can mail me or gnome-bugsquad@gnome.org for help. marquart@arlinn-tower.com : your ntfs problem is unrelated to the crash. quick off-topic info: see http://www.linux-ntfs.org . Microsoft does not publish developer information for NTFS nor a Linux driver. Please stick to the topic, thanks.
My apologies Christian, like I'd said I wasn't sure if it was related since that is what I was doing when she crashed. Thank you for the link! I'll go away now and not bother y'all. Take care & keep up the good work!

Burhan: your trace has debugging symbols but is missing a frame. Additionally, the trace differs from the one originally reported. It might be the same problem, it might not.
(In reply to comment #80) > Burhan: your trace has debugging symbols but is missing a frame. Christian: I'm not sure exactly what you mean by this. Could you please point to the exact section of the trace you are talking about and how I might provide the extra information (assuming it's possible). > Additionally, > the trace differs from the one originally reported. It might be the same > problem, it might not. The crash that I experienced (bug 385406) was marked as a duplicate of this one by Bruno Boaventura (comment #74), so I'm not sure whether it is the exact same crash either. Having looked through some of the (many) duplicate bug reports above, it seems that all file permission-related crashes are being marked as a duplicate of this bug. Would it be preferrable if I attached the stack trace to my original bug entry?

Could you please point > to the exact section of the trace you are talking about and how I might provide > the extra information (assuming it's possible). Just for clarity, the part I was unsure of was "is missing a frame."

Burhan: Missing frames are the lines with a double questino mark ("??") in them. The most important ones are the ones follwing the <signal handler> line. debugging symbols is the stuff within the parenthesis "(" and ")"

(In reply to comment #86) > Burhan: Missing frames are the lines with a double questino mark ("??") in > them. > > The most important ones are the ones follwing the <signal handler> line. > > debugging symbols is the stuff within the parenthesis "(" and ")" Ah, you're talking about the calls from libpthread and and libc. I was wondering whether their omission would be problematic. I guess the answer is Yes. Both those libraries belong to the package "glibc-2.5-3". I have the relevant debug packages installed ("glibc-debuginfo-2.5-3" and "glibc-debuginfo-common-2.5-3") but that part of the stack trace remains empty. Is there anything else that I can try, in order to get the missing information?

Created attachment 80539 [details] trace from nautilus crash Coming from bug 397034. I tried to change SELinux context on a file on SMB-share. But I have SELinux disabled.. This bug triggers easily, if the trace is not good enough, please provide some instructions how to proceed.

Susana: please check if the trace in the bug you close has debugging symbols, and copy the trace to the other bug. this is crucial and helpful! Thank you Jaakko for spotting this, this is REALLY HELPFUL since the trace is pretty good. I can confirm this report now and the developers can start fixing this problem.

nautilus_file_set_selinux_context is in a fc6-specific patch (that we want to bring upstream eventually)
I have a fix and will do an fc6 update.
yes, now that i have looked at all the dups, this is definitely a FC-only bug. alex, thanks for fixing, like always :-)

i've put this on the auto-reject list because we still get 15 dups per month. the rejecter sends an email to the reporter that he should please install fedora updates.
no new rejected reports for more than a month now (we reject reports from GNOME <=2.16). removing from the auto-reject list. 16 rejected reports.
