GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 338710
Evolution need to be restarted to list a new contact
Last modified: 2013-09-10 14:04:15 UTC
That bug has been opened on https://launchpad.net/products/evolution/+bug/30843 "f I add users to my contacts my right clicking on their email address in an email, it should add them to my address book but it doesn't work. There is no failsafe work around as far as I can see but I've manged to add one contact by messing around though can't replicate it anymore... This is under Dapper and the Evolution build is 2.5.90. ... > Thanks for your bug. What do you do exactly? You right click on "From: ..." email by example, pick the option to add it to your book, select the local book to the dialog and it doesn't work, the book is not changed? > Is your contact listed after restarting the app? ... Hello everyone, I can confirm this bug. Here are the steps: Let's say I get an email from someone I want to add to my contacts. I right click on their email address, and pick the option to add to Contacts. If you go to Contacts tab, it doesn't show the new contact. Please note: restarting Evolution shows the new contacts. Also, prior to restarting, if you were to try to add the contact again, you would be notified that the contact already exists. "
hmm. works fine here running evolution from cvs head (pre-2.7) on suse9.3, cannot reproduce this. the contact is added and displayed immediately.
I remember seeing this earlier, but in 2.6.1 on Ubuntu Dapper this bug seems to have been solved.

I can confirm this bug also with all Dapper updates as of 5/15/2006. Previously in Evo 2.4 I could open a Compose window, enter an address, then go back to the main window and add a new address book entry, and if I switched back to the compose window this address would appear in the completion list. Ever since upgrading to 2.6 this does not work - I either have to close the Compose window and open a new one to see the new address, or close Evolution entirely, and kill evolution-data-server for it to work.

when is the the on-disk representation of a contact created? same as bug 260383, but for contacts?
This has been fixed in the head, please verify.
devashish: then where is the patch, and can it be also committed to the stable branch?

Damn it, everytime I enter a bug, it turns out to be a dupe! Anyway, adding a me too here. However, I do not think that a simple restart fixes this issue. Here is the bug that I reported: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=346143
devashish: i cannot find any commit by you fixing this within the last weeks, and it's also not my task to search for stuff like this. add the patch here - also think of distros which backport stuff. please comment. thanks.

Now I'm getting slightly pissed. Poornima, *why* did you mark bug 328332 as a duplicate of this one? 328332 has been filed 3 months before this, and features *detailed* discussions about the root cause and how to fix this. No, restarting Evo actually is not necessary. Required reading: bug 328332, bug 337087 Also, Devashish: What "this" has been fixed? Care to comment and answer Andres questions? Still targetted for the current stable branch 2.6 to be fixed.
Confirming that the fix in bug 337087 (marking "Personal" ab as default) solves the issue for me. Thanks, Karsten!
Created attachment 68460 [details] [review] Patch This can be committed to stable also.
devashish: no. this *should have been* committed to stable also. for future reference, please avoid useless "This has been fixed in the head, please verify" comments, or at least respond faster. thanks. ok. patch committed to stable branch, fix will be included in evolution 2.6.3. thanks everybody for the patience.

Mikael, you're welcome. I'm glad my detailed investigation solved this already for you (and likely others), without the need to upgrade. :) Andre: Thanks for commiting to gnome-2-14 branch. Also, agreed, whole heartedly. Devashish: That was a totally useless comment. It is *your* duty to care about the stable branch as well.
(In reply to comment #23) > This can be committed to stable also. This comment does not even state explicitely that the patch has been committed to HEAD. Anyway, just checked -- committed to HEAD and gnome-2-14. Setting patch status accordingly.
