GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 119172
authentication dialog in smb:///
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
When i go to smb:/// on my small network with to linux/samba machines i get a password dialog when enumerating the network. This shouldn't really be necessary.
This is specific to the new version 0.99.11, and wasn't present in 0.99.8 (at least). This makes using smb:// urls basically useless.
It seems, that gnome-vfs-extras ver. 0.99.11 does contain this bug only, then compiled (and used) with libsmbclient version 3.0 At first I installed libsmbclient and libsmbclient-dev version 2.2.3a-12.3 (from debian security updates) and compiled gnome-vfs-extras then this bug didn't apear, but the bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105714 appeared. After I installed libsmbclient and libsmbclient-dev version 3.0, recompiled gnome-vfs-extras and restarted nautilus (with killall nautilus) this bug appeared and then I installed libsmbclient and libsmbclient-dev version 2.2.3a-12.3 again and after recompiling gnome-vfs-extras (and restarting nautilus again) I got this error when trying to go to smb:/// location: Sorry, couldn't display all the contents of "smb:///". So, it seems there are lots of problems when using gnome-vfs-extras with different libsmbclient versions on same computer.

Now gnome-vfs-extras package is useless for most users :( I think priority and severity of this bug should be increased, because gnome-vfs-extras libraries are useless while this bug exist. Btw, when developers are planing to fix this bug ?
When you pay us loads of money.
all fixed in latest version of gnome-vfs-extras, and now also merged into gnome-vfs.
