GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 115134
"Open in tabs by default" not working
Last modified: 2009-03-03 23:13:19 UTC
Going on websites that display popups or clicking on links containing "target=_new" still opens those pages in separate windows despite the fact that my preferences are set to "Open in tabs by default". Perhaps it is a decision from the start, but in that case, using tabs loses its sense.
Additional report of this can be found at http://bugs.debian.org/197599 Forwarded: When a popup appears, it doesn't open in a tab as it should, while the configuration checkbox "open in tabs by default" is on, and the gconf key interface/popups_in_tab is also on.
It's not possible to make a distinction between _blank and normal popups with current mozilla apo. I'm not convinced opening all popus in tabs is a good idea.
That's why I'm using tabs, partly for popups. I suggest that if tabs are used, everything opens into tabs. If some things are going into tabs and some others are not, it becomes confusing for users.
Tabs are crack!!!! long live tabs. I don't know anymore. I suck at designing ui that shouldn't exist. hmmm....I sound like mpt. I agree with marco. popup windows should probably open in new windows. Alot of pages use them to popup windows that are more like web applications (ie no browser chrome) than browsed pages.
I loved Galeon because it allowed me to force new popups to be opened in new tabs. So, I'd like to see this option implemented.
I agree completely with Toni Willberg's comment above. I'm currently sticking with running Epiphany version 0.6.0, the last version I know of that will open all popups in a tab (via the "Open Popups In Tabs" setting in the User Interface preferences) no matter how they were launched. I don't want any new browser windows cluttering up my screen unless I explicitly open a new window from the File menu.

Here's a link to my Epiphany testing page. It contains a test case for this bug too: http://www.peelo.com/epiphany-testing.html This bug is related but not a duplicate of bug 114949 which is about Javascript links and tabs, ie. "open popups in tabs" thing.

gotta agree with this bug - popup windows are the spawn of satan. forcing all popups to open in tabs just makes browsing so much more pleasant
Re: popups and tabs. ------------------------- Opening popups in tabs is just crack. The excuse that it makes managing them easier just points out that we need better popup management. Most sites that use popups in a useful way try to create web applications that aren't meant to use traditional browser chrome (and hence shouldn't be open in tabs). All other uses of popups are usually crappy ads that should just be blocked to maintain user sanity. I'm starting to think that we should just always block popups by default and include and easy to use switch in the view menu to selectively enable popups on a per-site basis only.
Even with good popup killing, there are still good reasons to open popups in tabs. E.g. many (crappy) sites replace all hyperlinks by new windows. I don't know whether it is possible to make a distinction for this kind of popups, but at least them *must* be opened in tabs.
Any chance that this will be fixed soon? Else I'll switch back to galeon, I don't want a browser that has no real tabbing (that's the reason why i left mozilla also).
You are free to use the browser that fits your needs better. Please do not use our time and patience with comments like this. For this feature to be added someone need to do the necessary mozilla work for it to be implementable correctly. I dont want to add hacks like this http://bugzilla.gnome.org/showattachment.cgi?attach_id=19064 to work around crashes it introduces ...
Have we filed the popup vs. _blank distinction bug at mozilla.org?
No I dont think we did.

That pref is gone on head and I think the new behavior is reasonable. Opening popups in tabs is not possible currently without doing nasty hacks. We can reconsider this if someone make the work to fix the problems in mozilla.

Maybe it is time to review this bug. It seems that it is now possible to do this. As discussed in this feature request: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=358075 I hope we can do it!
Depends on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=326299
I am not certain I understand. The only information in that mozilla bug is a description that points to a comment in a closed bug.... ??? Am I missing something?
In fact I think it depends on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=323810, which is *solved* since Mozilla 1.8.1 (implicitly also fixing https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=326299).
That is perfect. So there shouldn't be any technical reasons this cannot be done, is that correct?

This bug is marked as wontfix because it involves Gecko hacking. Nevertheless, I don't see mentionned the case when another external application open an URL and where we want it to the existing window even if the external application didn't followed the --new-tab option. Also, this bug might be reopened for epiphany-webkit. What do you think ?
