Description Steve Bergman 2006-09-28 02:09:40 UTC
I would like to see an options, or perhaps even default behavior, of opening links with target='_blank' in new tab. To be clear, I understand that opening popups in a new tab is inadvisable and am *not* requesting that.

My rationale:

Tabbed browsing can be more organized than nontabbed, but not when you end up with multiple windows with multiple tabs in those multiple windows.

Firefox introduced an option to do this in 1.0.x. In 1.5, they were confident enough to make it a full-fledged edit->preferences option.

In FF 2.0rc1 (the current version as I type this) opening target='_blank' in a new tab is the *default* behavior. Considering FF's user base, I'd say it's gotten some good testing.

My understanding is that back in 2004, Gecko did not support the features you needed to distinguish between _blank and javascript popups.

I hope that this situation has changed and that this feature is now feasible.

Thanks,
Steve Bergman

This bug is actually a duplicate of bug 115134 which is WONTFIX.

However, if there is a way now, like you suggest, to reliably detect _blank targets, it may be worth reopening that one.

I would also love to see this implemented. I have become accustomed to this behavior and see no reason that it should not be an option in Epiphany. I hope that it can be done. Thank you developers for all your good work on Epiphany!

This is basically the same RFE as bug 337725, marking DUPLICATE.
