GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 96215
Better applet than gkb?
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
I've heard a number of complaints about gkb, and there is this alternative: http://gswitchit.sourceforge.net/ I haven't actively looked for alternatives, just noticed this one. Maybe there are more. Should we consider something to replace gkb?
OK, gswitchit is better for PC (XFree86) users. Include it in Gnome, but Gnome will be platform-dephendent, IMHO. (Is there XKB extension in X on Sun?) I mean gswitchit is better (?) because it uses xkb natively...
Yes, Sun has XKB, and everyone else that matters (HPUX, Linux, etc.) will be using XFree86. It seems like input methods should be somehow involved here as well... Probably this question should be asked on gnome-i18n mailing list.
OK then I will integrate libklavier.
Please, make gkb working correctly with XKB and use libxklavier. For more information see bug 80585 : I think gkb and gswitchit should merge and xkb-related stuff should be done with library from gswitchit - http://gswitchit.sourceforge.net/libxklavier/doc/ Then will be no problems with gkb and xkb keymaps. (xmodmap related stuff can stay as it is now) When gkb applet is starting it should test if xkb extension is available and if it's so - then use xkb. This simplifies life for most users and gkb applet will be more user friendly too, because now all countries have minimum 2 identifical keymaps - County keymap and Country xkb keymap (for example Finland has Finland keymap and Finland xkb keymap), this misleads a lot of users, because they don't know which keymap to choose.
What's the status for this in 2.5.x? Are we going to keep both gkb and also include gswitchit or do they overlap in functionality *and* audience?
Yah, we are moving to gswitchit.
