Description Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2002-10-07 20:37:22 UTC
see bug 82707
s/New Folder/New Folder... ?

probably is right since technically you have to enter in information after
doing a new folder.
Comment 1 Luis Villa 2002-11-18 18:42:02 UTC
Dave, you might want to run many of these by glynn and see if it is
relevant to tag them with ui-review.
Comment 2 Christian Rose 2003-07-08 21:25:59 UTC
Is this still relevant?
Comment 3 Murray Cumming 2003-07-25 14:45:17 UTC
I think the ... is really just for stuff that would show a dialog.
Reopen if you feel strongly.
Comment 4 Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2003-07-25 15:03:02 UTC
Murray if we were using the Mac you would be correct. In gnome, though
elipses mean requires further information, not opens a dialog.

So to update it should be Create Folder... using nautilus' current
terminology (though I think New is better but i'm not going to fight
bout that)/
Comment 5 Murray Cumming 2003-07-28 14:54:38 UTC
The relevant HIG text says:
"Use an ellipsis (...) at the end of the label if the action requires
further input from the user before it can be carried out. For example,
Save As... or Find.... Do not add an ellipsis to commands like
Properties, Preferences, or Settings, as these open windows that do
not require further input."
so you have a point.

But I think that the point of the elipses is to reassure the user that
the action will not actually happen just yet - he will have a chance
to cancel. But the file _will_ be created. I would prefer to fix the HIG.
Comment 6 Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2003-07-28 20:38:25 UTC
Murray I have no opinion on the HIG recommendation. I believe a bug
exists regarding the HIG elipses recommendation. You may want to hunt
it down and add comments to it.
Comment 7 Murray Cumming 2003-07-29 07:37:29 UTC
I think you mean bug #93071, which is closed and does not seem to be
relevant.
Comment 8 Christian Neumair 2003-12-27 17:55:50 UTC
Murray Comming found the right words. I strongly feel like current
behavior is totally OK.
Instead, we should consider adding elipses to the "New Launcher" menu
entry which requests information from the user.

regs,
 Chris

changing title to reflect the change in direction of this bug instead of closing
this and filing a new one; also changing to Desktop component and adding a
ui-review keyword which should have been there.

Manny is right in comment #8 that the "Create Launcher" should have an elipse
("Create Launcher...") added to it as it is the exact case the HIG is referring
to in the elipse section. I don't see a big hurry to get this fix in as it
isn't really a disasterous bug, however consistency is nice (tm).

Manny, I'm sure you could drum up a patch for this very quickly, then we'll get
it on dave's radar and we could get this commited and closed :-)
Comment 10 Bryan W Clark 2004-09-29 03:08:19 UTC
Marking this one easy fix so it'll show up on new hackers radar

Christian: maybe you could email nautilus list with a summary of your
outstanding patches? :)
Comment 13 Martin Wehner 2005-03-25 15:38:39 UTC
I've updated the patch for head and committed it. Thanks.
