Description Bernhard Koenig 2009-04-07 15:44:20 UTC
Please describe the problem:
The window switcher displays tooltips of the form "Click to start dragging..." which are worthless and recently in 2.26 they seem to stick even longer than they should, i.e. I have to move pointer over them to disappear.

Steps to reproduce:
1. have firefox in workspace 1
2. go to workspace 3
3. in the workspace switcher, click on firefox in workspace 1 and QUICKLY move pointer to the middle of screen

Actual results:
you have a tooltip saying "Click to start dragging...." on your workspace switcher and it doesn't go away unless you move your pointer over it.

Expected results:
the tooltip should go away or (since it is false) not show up at all

Does this happen every time?
yes

Other information:
This is a new issue in Gnome 2.26 (Ubuntu Jaunty).

I'm not sure it is the same bug, but moving the cursor between workspaces it seems that the same tooltip is reused (see the animated gif).

AFAICT, this bug is caused by Compiz, not by Gnome. Disabling the "visual effect" (the name used in Ubuntu for Compiz) fixes this bug.
Comment 3 Bernhard Koenig 2009-04-19 18:52:33 UTC
Well, it's also an issue of the gnome-panel, because these tooltips of the window switcher are useless (dragging does not exist anymore in the window switcher).
Comment 4 F. Ingelrest 2009-04-19 18:58:03 UTC
No, it works with Metacity. It doesn't work with *Compiz*.
Comment 5 Bernhard Koenig 2009-04-20 06:00:39 UTC
It actually works for me after yesterday's updates.
Comment 6 Bernhard Koenig 2009-04-23 04:29:55 UTC
CORRECTION: it only worked for me because compiz blacklisted my hardware after the recent updates and fell back to metacity. And it works there!
Comment 7 Philip Withnall 2009-05-08 16:22:44 UTC
It's been established the tooltip timing is a Compiz bug, so this is a dupe of bug #581870; about the fact that the tooltips should perhaps not exist in the first place.

Comment 8 Bernhard Koenig 2009-05-08 17:15:49 UTC
Yeah, sorry. I didn't realize that compiz bugs are not reported here....
Comment 9 Sebastien Bacher 2009-05-13 21:17:09 UTC
why did you close the bug opened first which has extra detail in favor of a duplicate filed later?

Because that's the more relevant bug; this bug is more about it not working with Compiz, while bug #581870 is about the tooltips being unnecessary altogether. I don't think there's that much in it.
Comment 11 Bernhard Koenig 2009-05-14 03:58:16 UTC
I think Philip is right. It's the more relevant bug. Unfortunately, the other bug is also compiz-related. Maybe the "Click to start dragging..." tooltips should be removed, I realized they are valid for other window managers but compiz users are currently suffering because of them. I think the crucial question is really the following:

Should we wait until the dragging issue gets fixed in compiz or suppress the tooltip when compiz is running? I hope something is done because compiz is the default in Ubuntu.

IMO, it's a bug in Compiz (both sticking tooltips and non-dragable windows), and if Ubuntu devs want to enable Compiz by default, it's up to them to patch what needs to be patched until Compiz properly works (e.g., disabling tooltips on this workspace switcher, which should take no more than 5 mn to the packager). My two cents.
