GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 320917
screensaver that interacts with f-spot or gthumb
Last modified: 2006-02-23 03:30:38 UTC
It would be cool to have a screensaver that would do some nice zooming effects on a set of photos the user has in its f-spot or gthumb register. F-spot allows for easy tagging of photos: the screensaver could show the photos tagged for "places", for example. I believe it is MacOSX that has nailed this idea of screensaver+photo_manager+zooming_in_out... although I have seen Windows boxes with similar screensavers...
We have a slideshow that looks in ~/Pictures for photos. It doesn't do zooming because this would usually require depending on OpenGL. It might be nice to find all the photos that the user has tagged as "public" and show them in the slideshow.
What would be very nice would be a one-click way to add photos to a slideshow screensaver from f-spot/gthumb/other image organizing apps. Probably just needs a very minimal protocol to find out about the available directories for slideshows, or even just a hardcoded single slideshow "current photos".
Use of ~/Pictures is a grave bug since it will only be intuitive for English speaking users. I say that gnome-screensaver either should interoperate with gthumb to get the Albums or use a configuration setting.
I think the right thing is for f-spot or gthumb to install their own slideshow themes. The protocol for this is using the freedesktop menu entry spec.
I would love to see a slide show of my images in F-Spot. The one feature I want is that if a photo has a modified and an original version, I want it to display only the modified version. I want to hand on to the originals just in case, but I modified them for a reason, and I want to see only the enhanced version of my photos.
FYI: There is a similar bug (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=319177) that proposes a screen saver within f-spot. Post accordingly.
"We have a slideshow that looks in ~/Pictures for photos" So you mean I must rename the folder where I store my pictures in order for it to work? WOW that's stunning. I have an idea: I'm a Spanish speaker and thus my pictures folder is named "fotos", could we make this name the default so that everyone else on Earth has to name their pictures folder like mine in order to have a working slideshow screensaver? We could also add an option to allow the user to choose where to look for his or her pictures, though. Unless that would make the screensaver broken, of course.
CVS F-Spot now includes a screensaver theme that works with gnome screensaver and allows you to select a tag to use as the source of the photos in the f-spot preferences. I might be changing the packaging soon but the feature will be supported.
Larry, that is great! It is exactly what I have been hoping for. Thanks.
Having a a hard-coded ~/Pictures path is unbearably and cannot go into GNOME 2.14 like this. There must at least be a GConf key to set the folder path.
