Description Michael Monreal 2005-02-13 14:16:09 UTC
Please describe the problem:
-- Please note that although this is more a usablility problem I filed as normal
because it is a big regression from previous releases --

The problems:

1.) I use the "Extract Here" from the Nautilus right-click-menu quite often and
used to extract more than one archives most of the time. This is not possible
anymore in 2.9.x, when selecting multiple archives i can only "Create Archive".

2.) File-Roller now extracts archives to <archive name>_FILES. while i see that
this can be handy when extracting archives that don't contain a top-level
directory i don't see the use of this when extracting, for example, GNOME
release tarballs. It's just _very_ anoying.

Steps to reproduce:

Actual results:

Expected results:

Does this happen every time?
yes

Other information:
I hope these issues will be fixed befor 2.10 as they really are bad usability
regressions.

Agreed. You should be able to select more than one archive and extract them
simultaneously.

I can also confirm the behavior of file-roller extracting archives into new
folders called: <archive name>_FILES. This may be helpful for when an archive
does not contain directories. I find most archives taking the responsibility
and contains their own top-level directory or directories containing their files.

This does indeed make the "Extact Here" less useful. With the current method, I
have to extract the archive, move the files from the <archive name>_FILES
directory, then delete the <archive name>_FILES directory.

I find myself not using it and actually opening up file-roller and choosing to
extract all files. Most of the time I just want to extract it to my home
directory. But, the first directory within my home directory is chosen so I
need to manually select my home dir and then extract.

The usability has gone from 2 mouse clicks to about 5 or 6.
Comment 2 Michael Monreal 2005-02-15 09:04:52 UTC
what really got me was when i (manually, from release tarballs) updated my gnome
installation to the latest beta release. previously, this was "select all
tarballs, rightclick and extract". now it is "rightclick every tarball on his
own, extract and then move folders around" which brings me from 2 clicks to
something around 150 i guess...

Will Jan's patch go into cvs? What about the muliple archives? Could we please
get some words from a maintainer? thx

Somebody tell that the patch has been / will be applied, please. The current
behavior is a reason for me to return to the bash and feel happier there.
Comment 8 Michael Monreal 2005-05-16 08:55:05 UTC
Both points are adressed in CVS HEAD... reverting to 2.8.x behaviour as far as I
can tell. I'm using this right now and I'm quite happy with it. This bug could
be closed... or can we expect more changes? One thing that would be cool would
be to create a folder if the archive doesn't contain a top level directory (e.g.
most zip files)
Comment 9 Julien Olivier 2005-05-17 07:31:58 UTC
Bug #168388 is about creating a root folder when and only when the archive
doesn't contain a root folder. Maybe this bug should be re-opened, and this one
closed ?

Bug 168388 seems like a good way to fix this...

Closing this bug because the original issue seems to be resolved.
