GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 113212
galeon freeze when scrolling (with xinerama)
Last modified: 2009-08-15 18:40:50 UTC
Since I got my dual-head display about a month ago, I experienced many freezes of the galeon ui. I guess this is xinerama specific, as there is a similar bug-report in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=186251 (the freeze also happens, but less frequently, with keyboard scrolling). I guess it is also the same bug as http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72196 It is very reproductible: it occurs on some specific web pages, at a certain scrolling position. I do not have any other application which has the same problems (mozilla, phoenix, konqueror..), so even if it is an X bug (I am using xfree 4.2), galeon is the only application to trigger it.
Hi. Could you please send some of the URLs that make galeon fail? That way we can try to reproduce the bug and fix it.
Hello, this is not very easy as problematic pages may change with time, but I found these 3 which consistently freeze my galeon (either when loading the page, or when scrolling): http://www.quarante-deux.org/recits/egan.html http://www.nofrag.com http://sourceforge.net/projects/barcr-reader/ Note that epiphany freezes on the same pages, while firebird and mozilla are not affected. The freeze does not consume any cpu: (gdb) info thread * 8 Thread 98311 (LWP 2002) 0x40b415f4 in __pthread_sigsuspend () from /lib/libpthread.so.0 4 Thread 32771 (LWP 1996) 0x40b45446 in nanosleep () from /lib/libpthread.so.0 3 Thread 16386 (LWP 1989) 0x40d9f81a in poll () from /lib/libc.so.6 2 Thread 32769 (LWP 1988) 0x40d9f81a in poll () from /lib/libc.so.6 1 Thread 16384 (LWP 1984) 0x40da1de1 in select () from /lib/libc.so.6
This is unreproducable for me, I have used galeon and xinerama daily for a good few months now, and it has never frozen on me. Is this still causing problems with latest versions of galeon, gtk, and mozilla ?
yes, the bug is still here (galeon 1.3.14, mozilla 1.6, gtk 2.4.1) , but I found a workaround which is to enable antialiasing in galeon (by installing the recommended package "mozilla-xft" on my debian). With this package, the bug does not appear anymore (and I have nicer fonts!)
This must be a problem in mozilla, or its embedding component then, Galeon itself doesn't care about whether the mozilla-xft package is installed.
