Subject: Gnome panel crashes repeatedly

Package: gnome-panel
Severity: Serious
Version: 2.0.6
Synopsis: Gnome panel crashes repeatedly
Bugzilla-Product: gnome-panel
Bugzilla-Component: Panel
BugBuddy-GnomeVersion: 2.0 (2.0.3)

Description: Gnome panel crashes repeatedly

Description of Problem:
Gnome panel crashes repeatedly

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Started Gnome desktop after installing RedHat 8.0
2. Moved panel to preferred position which is
   vertical at right of screen.
3. Configured flashing red blob (RedHat notification tool) and
   removed it from the panel.
4. Noticed faint stripe near where red blob had been (like a
light grey and dark grey barber's pole)
5. Clicked on this or click/dragged to see what it was.

Actual Results:

Gnome panel reported crash in an Error dialog box. Click Close,
panel restarts and promptly crashes again.

Expected Results:

How often does this happen?

Every time. Restarted X server - still occurs.
Removed $HOME/.gnome* and /tmp/orbit-$USER and restarted
X server, still occurs.

Went looking for files called desktop or panel. Then
removed all of $HOME/.gnome*, $HOME/.gconf* and
/tmp/orbit-$USER. The logged in OK, without panel
crashes. Panel has reverted to default position at
bottom of screen.

Later it happened again, also with the panel on the right. The bug
report for this is attached, in case the backtrace shows anything
different.

Additional Information:

I can't find anything similar at bugzilla.gnome.org.

Restarted X server to try to regain control of Gnome desktop
  (telinit 3, then telinit 5)
On logging in to Gnome desktop, panel crash as above continued
to occur. It's not possible to exit from the desktop as the
only logout method is on the panel, which has crashed.

Fortunately KDE is still operational (with panel on the right).
