GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 98909
[ui-review] Panel context menu UI issues
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
UI review: - seperator in between the two about entries if keeping both - too many entries with 'button' -- possibly create an 'Actions' submenu? --- Actions > Lock Screen etc.. mirrors menu panel - s/Launcher from Menu/Application - s/Launcher.../Other Application - _Add to Panel and _About GNOME have same mnemonic (hmmm, on mine this is "About _GNOME" but I'll submit it anyway) - Accessories needs an icon
I think that the "Launcher form Menu" item should be removed, not renamed. It is a bad way to do what you can now do via the Applications Menu. IMHO It was a messy workaround for 2.0 and should be removed now that we have the equivelent functionality where it should be.
Re: s/Launcher from menu/Application s/Launcher.../Other Application... I disagree with this change for the following reasons: * Launcher is specific and clear, and tells you what the object does * Both application and launcher are defined in the GDSG, and the use in the Add to Panel menu complies with these definitions. * An object on a panel that starts an application is not an application. * The term launcher is used in more places than in the Add to Panel menu - there are three types of launcher: 1. Nautilus launcher 2. Panel launcher 3. Menu launcher The UI contains lots of references to these launchers. If the term launcher is unsatisfactory then we need to agree a replacement term and implement that throughout the UI. The UI would be inconsistent if we replace one instance of the term. Also the suggested replacement doesn't accurately describe what a launcher is. Also note that Mac uses launcher. Windows uses shortcut.
Also s/GNOME Menu/Main Menu This change also needs to be made in the tooltip of the Main Menu panel object. Here's the argument for this change: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/usability/2002-November/msg00218.html
I think i think someone from usability (i forget who maybe Anna Dirks?) mentioned that "Shortcuts" generally made more sense to people than Launcher. Launcher makes me think of the program on the mac that runs at startup and presents you with buttons so that you can easily start various frequently used programs. (dont think Gnome has one of those, IMO it is useful but annoying for more advanced users).
> - seperator in between the two about entries if keeping both done > - too many entries with 'button' > -- possibly create an 'Actions' submenu? > --- Actions > Lock Screen etc.. mirrors menu panel This was changed since the review. We now have a "Button" submenu with all these. > - s/Launcher from Menu/Application > - s/Launcher.../Other Application I'm with Eugene on this one. > - _Add to Panel and _About GNOME have same mnemonic (hmmm, on mine > this is "About _GNOME" but I'll submit it anyway) Yeah, its About _GNOME here too. > - Accessories needs an icon I think there's a seperate bug on that - long standing issue. There's nothing I can do about it really so I'd prefer it as a seperate bug. > - s/GNOME Menu/Main Menu Done. 2002-12-04 Mark McLoughlin <mark@skynet.ie> Fix ui-review issues in #98909. * menu.c: (create_panel_submenu): add seperater between 'about' menu items. (make_add_submenu), (add_menu_widget), (create_panel_menu): s/GNOME Menu/Main Menu/g
Can I be a pest and say that the button submenu completely blows? I much prefer the UI review suggestion of mirroring the Actions menu here. ie. Add to Panel > Action > Log Out Lock Screen .... I think Action is more descriptive than button - why do we have buttons and launchers? What's the difference between a button and a launcher? I'd quite like to see some discussion on this. cc'ing usability-maint.
> - s/Launcher from Menu/Application > - s/Launcher.../Other Application For the record, there's a bug about this: bug #75103.
So, the ui-review suggestion was: Add to Panel -> .. .. -- Applications > Action > -- Other Application... -- Main Menu right? I think I kind of prefer that too, although I'm not sure "Other Application..." is quite distinct enough from "Applications >".
Yeah, I think s/Launcher from menu/Application/ could work quite well. But Other Application... kind of blows and I'm not sure I'm too keen on the idea of having seperators and thus having the Main Menu, Menu Bar and Drawer totally isolated ....
I'm closing this bug since it appears we have all the additions in here already commited. Feel free to re-open if I missed something. Some of the unresolved issues are on going in bug #75103.
