Description Olivier Crête 2002-11-18 15:38:05 UTC
Applications should not be in a submenu of the "foot menu". 99% of the use
of the foot panel is to access applications, so I should not be force to
make extraneous movement and click everytime I use it.. I had suggested
bringing back the old configurable behavior in #gnome, but I was told "its
a bug". So here is the bug report.. Btw I use gnome 2.0, so I dont know if
that already fixed in 2.1. There should be a little line under where the
applications is now and then the applications themselves...
Comment 1 Vincent Untz 2002-11-18 16:05:10 UTC
It's the same in GNOME 2.1.2.
I think that Applications is a submenu here because if it's not, there
will be too many items in the menu.
But maybe there's a better solution to this problem.

CC'ing usability people because they have a lot of plans for the menus :)
Comment 2 Mark McLoughlin 2002-11-27 07:58:22 UTC
usability guys: could one of you handle closing as a dup or WONTFIX or
whatever this bug. I've completely lost track of all the various menu
re-org bugs. Dave, I know you're handling this mostly. Thanks.
Comment 3 Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2002-12-04 05:21:37 UTC
This is for "Gnome Menu" or foot menu applet. While I personally think
we should discourage use of it, I think that the reporter has a point
and that the various appliction folders should not be in a subfolder.
This would ber similar to the KDE kmenu on their panel and i believe
is the default in redhat 8 as well for gnome. This is slightly
different from that traditional windows start menu which is more like
the current gnome foot menu.

I'm working from memory here since I don't have a copy of gnome handy
but the general layout should be something like

------------------------
Accessories =>
Desktop Preferences =>
Internet =>
etc.
------------------------
Run...
other stuff...

We should probably also take a look at how RH8.0 and Ximian etc. have
decided to customise this menu in their 2.x distros, to see if there's
any commonality we should draw on for the community default. (I don't
believe Sun's going to customize it for their initial release, but it
probably will in future).

I don't see the Foot menu should be discouraged. I'm not a great fan
of the top panel (too narrow), and don't want to have two panels on my
desktop.

I reported the bug which was marked as a dup of this, and I believe
the menu layout I outlined is rather sensible (and it very similar to
the Ximian GNOME 1 layout)
Comment 7 Mark Finlay 2003-06-29 17:48:10 UTC
Redhat has done this since it has had Gnome 2.x - I'm not sure about
Ximain, they may not have changed it because they don't use the foor menu.

It would be great to get this in to 2.4 - I can't really see any
reason not to: It provides consistency with the menu panel, makes
applications easier to get to, and only makes the menu a few items longer.
Comment 8 Mantas Kriaučiūnas 2003-10-14 15:52:00 UTC
I think main menu layout should be customisable, like in Gnome 1.4

Then everyone would be happy, as for some users it's easier, when Applications are in a submenu while others (for example me) think, that Applications shouldn't be in a submenu.

See bug# 106394 for more info.
Comment 9 Egle K. 2003-11-16 15:43:40 UTC
I also would like to see customisable main menu, like in Gnome 1.4

Currently I have KDE menu in my Gnome menu, but I never use this menu.
Why I can't remove this now ?
Comment 10 Olivier Crête 2005-02-17 19:24:38 UTC
Has any progress been made on that front ? If there is a way to customize this
easily, that is without having to understand half a dozen different XML formats..
Comment 11 Vincent Untz 2005-02-17 20:09:48 UTC
Olivier: see bug #163501 ;-)
Comment 12 Bryan W Clark 2005-02-17 20:12:45 UTC
I think this bug is fixed now right Vincent? Since we have the layout done in
bug 163501
Comment 13 Vincent Untz 2005-02-17 20:21:49 UTC
Well... Let's mark it as a dup.
