GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 97482
Noun and adjective in the same messages in galeon
Last modified: 2014-08-26 19:51:09 UTC
#: src/general-prefs.c:127 ui/prefs-dialog.glade.h:52 msgid "Russian" This message represents both the noun "Russian" (as in the language) and the adjective "Russian" (as in "Russian character encoding"). This is most unfortunate for many languages other than English, where the noun and adjective might not be the same word.
This is also true for #: src/general-prefs.c:136 ui/prefs-dialog.glade.h:69 msgid "Ukrainian"
While on this tricky issue you might want to consider another similar problem where the adjective has a different form depending on the gender of the noun it applies to. For instance in Bulgarian the "Russian" in "Russian roulette" and "Russian club" is Руска and Руски. ..I would think there must be some gettext convention for these things...
Most of these cases can be solved by a simple redesign of the messages. In this case, changing the names of the languages is for obvious reasons not an option, but perhaps the encoding entries could be more verbose, so that you instead of just "Russian" have "Russian encoding" or "Russian character set". If that's not an option I think intltool has a "Q" keyword or something like that, that adds context to messages. Perhaps kenneth could explain more about that or point to a document explaining it?
Actually it is in EEL (too bad noone tried moving this to glib 2.2) There are some functions so you can add comments in your strings. These comments will then be removed before we show the string. like Q_("Russian[ charset]"); etc. Marking it as attributive adjective it not enought as for instance in Icelandic you decline the adjective so it follows the genus and casus (and even other things) of the noun.
> Actually it is in EEL (too bad noone tried moving this to glib 2.2) I added bug 97556 for that.
There is Q_() in glib now, but apparently translators have problems with it: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-i18n/2004-December/msg00156.html
Galeon has not seen any code changes since May 2010: https://git.gnome.org/browse/archive/galeon/log This project is not under active development anymore and got recently archived in GNOME Git. It is currently unlikely that there will be any further active development. Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect reality. Please feel free to reopen this bug report in the future if anyone takes the responsibility for active development again.
