To be more specific, I found that the panel crashed after the system-tray had been moved to a vertical hedge panel. I deleted the ~/gconf/apps/panel/profiles/default/applets/system_tray (or someting like that), and then I could log-in again. Then I re-created a system_tray in an horizontal panel, and everything went fine.
