Description Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2002-09-25 02:35:17 UTC
I think it might be helpful to have a global go menu in the panel. the
rationale is that user shouldn't have associate an application with
viewing a directory or location. For example, if a user wants to view an
ftp site why should they have to open a nautilus window (why force the
application association, this just makes the action harder to perform).

Instead, I think it would be far more easier to have a go menu in the panel
that included entries for some common locations (home, root folder) perhaps
a network subfolder containing user defined network locations (maybe based
on hadess' network folder idea) and a location bar. The location bar would
open nautilus for folders, galeon for web pages etc.

I'd really prefer a more conrete description of what should be in the
menu and some input from the rest of the usability team

This idea probably belongs in the same bucket as the task-based menus
of #81545.

In the shorter term, one idea might be be to allow items on our global
"Open Recent" menu to be pinned there so that they never slipped off
the bottom, essentially turning part of the menu into some sort of
Favourites list. We could pre-load the Favourites part with some
useful locations like Home, as you suggested. (This assumes that all
the types of document you might want to pin there are currently added
to the Open Recent menu, though, which they probably aren't.)

Pretty much a duplicate of task based menus
