GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 93505
Gnome-Terminal does not show an Icon in Workspace Switcher
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Unlike other apps (Opera/Nautilus etc.) Gnome-Terminal does not show an Icon in the Workspace switcher but only a blue retangle. Gnome2.0.2 build from tarballs of Sep 15th. I think it's a handy feature that the icons are shown in the Workspace Switcher rather than the attempt to draw the screen in small like in Gnome-1.4 (which is CPU consuming).
Windows that are too small to contain an icon don't have an icon. Try making your terminal window larger.
Even in FullScreen the Terminal does not get an Icon in the Workspace Switcher. I don't understand why the App has to be of a specific size. I understand it like that, the Icon in the Workspace Switcher indicates which application is active on this Workspace. So, why does the application have a specific size ? If the Terminal is the active application then, draw the Teminal Icon to the Workspace Switcher, no matter large the Terminal Window is. But as I said even in fullscreen Mode there is no Icon in the Workspace Switcher. If the "Icon Feature" is meant different. Then I would suggest to implement it, that the Icon of the active application is drawn to the Workspace Switcher no matter how large the Application Window is. Or in other words, exactly the same behavior as you have at the right corner on your top panel, where also always the Icon of the active application is drawn (don't know the name for this core applet).
The icon is unrelated to the active window; all windows in the workspace switcher that are large enough to have room to draw the icon should display an icon. If I make my gnome-terminal large enough, it gets an icon. Depending on the size of your panel and size of your screen, it may not be possible to make it large enough in a particular configuration, though if you can make say mozilla large enough, you should be able to make gnome-terminal larger as well.
I have a 19" Monitor and I'm running Gnome at 1024x768. Opera and Mozilla could be made large enough. I tried different sizes, and also Fullscreen but still the Gnome-Terminal get's no Icon. Could this be related to Metacity ? I don't use Sawfish. BTW, wouldn't it be a great improvement for usablitily if the active application (the app who has the focus) will draw an icon to the Workspace Switcher, no matter how large the app Window is ? So then the behavior would be exactly like the core applet sitting at the very top right of the top panel. I think this would great, because if you're working on workspace 4 you know what apps are you have opened on the other workspaces and don't have to cycle around. Also I think it could be a performance improvement as there doesn't have to be drawn the measure of the open Window, only the app's icon. (Which is absolutley enough, I think)
I also have no icon, but most of my apps show no icon.
This works fine for me; it's not going to get fixed unless someone can explain to me how to reproduce it. Note there's a preference for the gnome-terminal icon, maybe this was changed somehow? Do you guys have icons in the task list, just not the workspace switcher? How about in window manager themes that display the app icon?
I personally have an Icon in Metacity, as well as in the Taskbar Switcher and in the Right Top Corner of the Panel, but not in the Workspace Switcher
Let's assume a workspace switcher bug instead of a terminal bug then.
I see icons for all my apps as long as they're big enough on the desktop to hold the icon. Has this changed?
I see the gnome-terminal icon whenever the rectangle representing gnome-terminal in the workspace switcher is large enough to fit the icon. With a 48px panel, I have to make gnome-terminal bigger than the default 80x24 for the icon to show. With a 96px panel, it shows at the default size.
I believe this is a duplicate of bug 94453. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 94453 ***
