cc-ing usability guys. I don't know if this is a good idea since I don't think a normal user will use it so often and I don't want to add rarely used functions in the toolbar. BTW, in gedit CVS HEAD the list of recent files is in the file menu directly and not in the Recent Files submenu.
It's certainly an interesting idea and I don't think I've ever heard suggested before... actually I quite like the sound of it, but that's without actually trying it of course :) However, I think we'd have to standardize on how to do it (and write it into the HIG) before encouraging people to actually use it in their applications. Otherwise we'll end up with some applications using it and some not, which would be inconsistent and annoying for users.
I've opened bug 93033 against the HIG containing this suggestion and put usability and Kang in the Cc. Closing this bug.
I would be happy to add this feature into the current recent-file code. I don't think it would be very difficult, and I like the idea.
This feature is now in gedit CVS.
I'd just like to add that this is a particularly cool and, I feel, innovative feature. I would love to see this added to the HIG for document-centric GNOME software. Thanks very much to Kang for reporting it -> did you pick this up from another source? Just interested in whatever prior art exists.
