Description Tim Wunder 2002-09-04 15:20:20 UTC
Occasionally, in the process of a user refining how accounts are used in
GNUCash, the need arises to move a bunch of transactions from one account
to another. Currently there is no easy way of doing that. It would be
useful to select a group of transactions, using shift-clikk, ctrl-click, or
some other method and then move them to another account.

This RFE was prompted by a discussion on IRC, part of which went as follows:

shayne: one other question.. say I have an account called Income:Items
Sold:eBay Auctions, and I'm getting tired of that and just want to lump
everything into Income:Items Sold, how do I move all the transactions in
eBay Auctions up to its parent?

warlord: Very very slowly and painfully....

shayne: oh no :(

warlord: I do not believe there is an easy way to do that..

warlord: For example, I dont think you can rename the "Income:Items
Sold:eBay Auctions" account to "Income:Items Sold"

warlord: Although if the existing "Income:Items Sold" account has nothing
but the child, you can play the reparent/delete/rename game

shayne: aha!

shayne: the parent has only one transaction

warlord: Feel free to file an RFE at bugzilla.gnome.org requesting the
feature for "bulk transaction moves"

This should (also?) be available from a search results register.

I realize this is an old submission, but I just recently installed 2.1.2 on windows and this was one of the first things that I found I was missing in gnucash. I didn't want to add a dupe report.

One way to address this might be to update the Find dialog and make it more of a general Find and Replace one, similar to the way Quicken did at one point (might still, but I haven't used it in a long time).

I find that a lot of my time is spent importing qif files or online banking files and categorizing them, so anything to simplify that process would be helpful. Being able to select multiple rows in the ledger to perform actions on or doing something like Find and Replace would be a great help.

Thanks for porting over to Windows though.

Please implement this. I'm currently importing a year's worth of checking and Visa transactions, and assigning all of them to accounts is killing me. It would be so much faster if I could select all the transactions of a given type and assign them at once (eg. all the times we bought gas last year).

PLEASE PLEASE add ability to select and move multiple transactions. I realy need that. GnuCash can only copy / paste a single transaction. (KMyMoney CAN NOT MOVE TRANSACTIONS AT ALL!!! So GnuCash is (almost) perfect)

As long as it is not easily possible to move around transactions in GnuCash, there is too much dependency on the structure found in QIF file.

For my administration flow i will need a lot of steps.

What i want to do:
* 1 Download Bank Transactions (CSV, CHAOS)
* 2 Transform to QIF (need to make some tool, CHAOS)
* 3 Organize and create overview with GnuCash (ORDER, OVERVIEW)

Of course i could already categorize the transactions with the tool i need to make for step 2. However it would be nice to use the beautiful GUI and concepts from GnuCash instead of some obscure cmd line tool. It will give freedom to revise structure.

I vote for this feature.

Need to open new ticket for bulk replace of text fields (.e.g Description, Notes)?

Thank you for taking the time to explain your enhancement request.

The described enhancement is a good proposal and would be an advantage for the software. However, as a volunteer-driven project with limited resources, the GnuCash developers have their own priorities about the features which are most likely being worked on in the near future. In that sense, the current GnuCash developers decided not to work on your proposed feature in the next 4-6 months. In case you would like to have this feature implemented in any case, you have the following option: 1. Start to program in gnucash yourself - see http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Development . 2. Convince someone who is not yet part of the GnuCash team to join the team and implement your feature. 3. Pay some of the GnuCash developers to implement your feature - ask on the mailing list gnucash-devel@gnucash.org in that case. Thank you very much.

Feel free to file other bugs or enhancement requests that you find, though.
