Sun Gnome2.0 Beta2 Build_5

This is an intermittent Desktop hang that renders the Desktop unusable. A number
of people have come across this, commencing from build_4.

Basically at random points the Desktop focus stay with a given application, all
mouse clicks fail. Actions with the focus applications are still sometimes
possible.

The last time I had this problem, gnome-terminal had focus. However, I could use
the "Open" Sun keyboard key to minimise gnome-terminal - but due to a bug this
actually causes a "Shade" activity to take place. When I did this the Desktop
was usable again. A subsequent "Unshade" rendered it virtually unusuable
again.

I've run into this problem about every other day since installing Beta2_04.
However, I've not been able to track down exactly what is causing the problem
- I can't spend much time because its on my desktop and I need to get the
system back. (To recover, I log into the system from another machine and kill
'gnome-session' which will exit the hung desktop and put it back at the login
screen.)

It may not help much, but ...

It just happened to me again after I opened a terminal window (one of many).
Since I had focus in that terminal when the desktop hung, I was able to
continue working in it. Rather than blowing away everything via killing
'gnome-session' as mentioned above, I just killed 'gnome-terminal'. Granted
all my terminals ceased to exist, but my desktop unfroze and all other apps
appeared to be ok.

Some more commentary

I've come across this a couple of times since installimg Sun Gnome2.0
Beta2 build4 yesterday. I found that a double click on another window
sorted it out for me. I'll see if I can narrow down the cause of it
and let you know. The few times it happened I was using netscape 7
from /usr/dist/share/netscape,v7.0/beta/

Adding gnome-bugs@wipro.com and gnome_bugs@sun.com in the CC list.
Comment 3 Ghee Teo 2002-08-30 10:34:25 UTC
This paricular problem seems to relate to metacity fucusing problem.
I have logout and login and one of the program crashed, then it hanged
at gnome_segv dialog. I had also seen this happened when I started up
apps from the applications menu and fairly quickly click on something
else.

The one workaround is that one can use Alt-Tab to get a terminal
window into focus and then pkill the application that hanged.
You should then get back to normal.
Comment 4 Havoc Pennington 2002-08-30 17:18:21 UTC
The thing to do is probably to run metacity with
env variables METACITY_VERBOSE=1 METACITY_USE_LOGFILE=1
and after the hang, attach the last chunks of the log file. Those
should record what happened or at least give some clues.

Karl, Prabhut, was this verified as being a sun-patch specific problem?
Comment 6 Hidetoshi Tajima 2002-08-31 02:00:36 UTC
This looks like sun-patches specific problem.

By backing out a patch against src/display.c change which was given by
metacity/318-83357-w.diff, one
of the grab problems I constantly experienced with Netscape7 stops
happening.

Bug 83557 is "Modal Dialog behaviour is broken".
which sounds really likely.
Comment 7 Hidetoshi Tajima 2002-08-31 02:03:44 UTC
oops, it's Bug 83357. putting this in dependencies.
Comment 8 Bharat Tewari 2002-09-02 04:25:00 UTC
sorry to have not updated on this bug a little earlier, it seemed to
have caused by a specific patch in sun patches directory which was
not initializing a variable and hence the intermittent hang. this has
been fixed and the new patch uploaded to sun patches directory.
Its been caused by a patch which is not as such visible in the
community. Jeyasudha can you please update this bug.
Comment 9 JeyaSudha 2002-09-02 04:35:19 UTC
Sorry the problem is due to modal dialog patch and i recreated the
patch and uploaded in sun-patches. I have added the new patch in Bug
83357 also. Please check the same.
