Seems to be fixed now in GTK+ head.

have any idea which fix this was so we can tell if something
needs to be backported to stable?

Seems to work fine with gdk-pixbuf 0.19.0, gtk-2-0 and gtk head

In contrast with the image from bug 71237 which still crashes.0.19.0
but works with gtk-2-0 and gtk head

I've backported the HEAD stuff to the 1.4 branch.  None crash, but
they can't load the icon.

It no longer crashes, so marking as fixed.  The problem where
compressed icons are not supported still remains.
