The error message that you get when logged in as root is a standard
error message that you will be seeing with other GNOME programs as
well. The crash that you are experiencing when you are logged in as
user is fixed in GNOME-PIM 1.4.7, available at
http://me.in-berlin.de/~jroger/gnome-pim.

Thanks for your report!
