if you set the gtk+ font to something nice and big, like 18 point, the crux
theme paints itself rather badly.  Seems that the root problem is, the
bitmaps are too narrow.

Extending the bitmaps to be wider (and clipping them to size) should fix
this  part of the problem.  Will leave the issue of hard-coded button
sizes, etc. to another bug.
