this is a font installation issue. louie, have you run into instructions on how to set up your fonts for pango? owen, shouldn't pango not crash and print some message instead?
If it is the no XftConfig thing, then it is a dup of bug 65109. I'd be happy to take a patch that tried to be a bit more explanative (I'm not even close to being able to test that on any of my machines, so I can't do it.) But there is no getting around the fact that Pango, or the thing that called Pango is going to crash; the only way of getting around that would be to ship a fallback font with Pango.
