Description Rodd Clarkson 2002-06-04 01:33:41 UTC
The start here icon on the desktop just opens up a window that allows you
to change various settings and gives you access to a very shitty way to
access the Applications menu.

It should either be:

1. renamed to something that makes more sense like "Settings", or
2. it should be removed from the desktop and made into a link in the home
directory, or
3. it should be made more usable. The preferences should remain, but the
main set of applications should be moved to the default window, along with
access to the home directory or something.

There's probably plenty of other options, but my point is that it currently
isn't a very good start point, and it needs serious consideration.

In newby terms, this icon beckons you to start here, but as a starting
point it sucks.

This is probably effectively a dup; can you find it, daveb?

Well I chose to close a bug i had about including more in start-here:

Personal opinion, and one that many seem to agree on, is that post 2.0
start-here: needs to be removed, since essentially it's just another
applications menu. The contents of system-settings:, preferences: and
server-settings: are all available from the applications menus and
applications directory.

post 2.0 release i'm going to propose removing start-here: and just
including a go menu and toolbar item for applications in nautilus, so
that these items are accessible from nautilus. However from the
desktop, users should just be using the menu panel or gnome-menu to
access programs, it's faster and a cleaner ui. Maybe i'll find the
related remove start-here: bug.

Rodd, based on my statements, would you mind if i just close this bug???

I'd be more than happy to see the start-here icon removed. It's
excessive and doesn't really seem to be the place to start.

I'm not worried so much with what's done with it, in so much as what
it currently is (which is really not worthwhile).

I'd prefer to see something actually done before this bug is closed
(so that it's not forgotten) but do with it as you will. Just as long
as something appropriate is done with the Start Here icon. ;-]

Rodd the start-here: icon would be removed too by my changes,
basically i would remove the whole concept etc. of start-here:. I've
already added a dependency on the remove start-here: bug, i'll leave
this bug open at your request and close it if/when 83428 is fixed.
Comment 5 Rodd Clarkson 2002-06-07 01:58:33 UTC
I just took a look at 83428 and it covers this, so close it.
