What version of gnome-libs are you using?
am not completely sure but locate gnome-libs shows /usr/lib/gnome-libs-1.4.1.6 it should be the latest from Ximian, since I just updated to get the latest version of evolution (1.05).
This happens all the time when you log in? If there is a panel running you could try finding it's processs id and run gdb. Inside gdb type attach PID. Pressing ctrl+c here will stopp the process and typing 'bt' will give you a backtrace of where it's hanging.
no it does not happen all the time. It also appears to happen with one user account, mine of course :-) I will do as you suggested next time the problem happens.
