GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 82542
Metacity's maximized windows should not have borders.
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
When a window is maximized, metacity should hide the window borders, since they are non-functional in this circumstance. The way they are now, the borders on maximized windows fill the screen edges with dead pixels, even though the screen edge is the most valuable real estate on the desktop. As an example, consider apps such as galeon or mozilla, which are frequently maximized. They both put the scrollbar all the way on the edge of the window so that it is an easy target for the mouse. Metacity wastes this effect.
This is a function of the theme; the theme determines what the frame is like when maximized, including border size.
Thanks for the information, Havoc. I took a look at the default theme and saw that maximized windows are using small borders, rather than the normal borders. Is there any reason why the borders aren't removed altogether? I made the trivial changes to get the behavior I wanted, so I'm happy. I can send you the modified file if you like, otherwise we can safely mark this as NOTABUG.
Let's leave the bug open to consider changing the default theme. (You don't really need to send the modified file, the patch is pretty obvious right.)
Changed for default theme.
