Description Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2002-05-17 05:41:44 UTC
from http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/proposals/nautilus.html
------------------------------------------------------------------------
* The titlebar needs to be a bit more descriptive than listing a simple one
word directory name

PROPOSED SOLUTION: Use a full path rather than just the current directory.
A lot of people have directories with the same name in different paths,
this will clear up any confusion.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The problem is that when users (aka me) choose not to use the location bar,
nautilus provides absolutely no spatial information to the user. This is
bad....

marking severity as trivial, since imho this is a little bit bigger
usability problem than a pure enhancement

If Nautilus is going to be a graphical shell and not just another file
manager, then this is a bad idea. (File managers suck, btw. A workplace
shell would rule! ;-)

A better solution is a window manager that supports something like
this:

You make a decent point, but considering that what you propose would
proabably involve integrating metacity or sawfish (probably metacity)
alot deeper into gnome and nautilus, i think that including the full
path is a good short term solution. do you agree that much???
Comment 3 Gregory Merchan 2002-05-17 06:38:43 UTC
No.

It doesn't need 'deeper integration', it needs a protocol that any
client can use to provide the same function. One is also needed
for proxy icons. (Hit Previous on the Apple page to see that.)

It should, for example, be possible for a text editor to provide
similar data to a window manager to support DnD saving by proxy icon
and opening the parent folder of the document with the path menu.

I already sent email to wm-spec-list earlier this month:
  http://mail.gnome.org/archives/wm-spec-list/2002-May/msg00021.html

I've not received any replies.

I don't think displaying the full path is a good idea. Just on an
immediate/practical level it makes the names useless in the window list.
