Erm... 

Just wondering whether the icon that shows the status of the weather 
should have a transparent background so we can have pixmaps look cool 
underneath the applet?

This is an issue with other applets also - there is a bug filed
already for geyes. I'm not sure if the panel really supports this yet
though.
