GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 795853
Can't specify installation folder
Last modified: 2018-05-24 19:48:01 UTC
Install halts, demanding that I uninstall 2.8.22 first, because it wants to use that folder. Alternatively, specify another folder, but I never get prompted for this in the custom install wizard.
Which installer are you using - gimp-2.10.0-x64-setup.exe, gimp-2.10.0-setup.exe or gimp-2.10.0-setup-1.exe ? If the first one, try with the latest installer (gimp-2.10.0-setup-1.exe) first. If any of the other two, please paste the exact error message you receive (you can press Ctrl+C in the error popup to copy the text to clipboard).
Okay, much better, but no cigar ... . It was gimp-2.10.0-x64-setup.exe that I used; downloaded latest; wizard appeared the same - meaning, no prompt for install folder! But, it proceeded to install, in a folder that had been used for an earlier version again, which no longer existed, C:\Apps\Gimp-2.8.16 . It still relied only on registry info? Also, the latest install is much larger - more components? Thanks for the feedback!
While I'm here, I'm noticing that the brush type dialogue is behaving very non-intuitively - switching between Basic Fun Legacy, etc is not happening - it did once, because I did the "right thing", but I'm not sure what that was ...
Please do not mix different issues into one bug report. Thanks.

Yes, it relies on registry data there. > Also, the latest install is much larger - more components? Yes, there are more components. The approximate size is also mentioned on the downloads page, so this shouldn't come as total surprise.

Yes, you're not supposed to delete the install directory - if you want to remove GIMP, you have to uninstall it with the provided uninstaller (either through Control Panel/Setting app, or by running unins\unins000.exe). The installer is larger also because it now includes debug info as an optional component.
