GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 795666
Backslash "\" in Description field spoils CSV Import without helpful error message
Last modified: 2018-06-30 00:09:13 UTC
CVS importer on v3.0.1 in Debian Buster failed to import an (AMEX) CVS with a sinlgle '\' (backslash) character in it. Import was OK when character deleted. \ was in the Description column The entire description field as I found it in the CSV was (in my single quotations): 'WINNERS GARAGE WINNERS GARAGE\ - WOODSIDE NY' It was the only backslash in three years of Amex CSVs. I don't recall ever having my cursor in that field, so I believe it unlikely I accidentally typed it myself. LibreOffice Calc (on Linux) and Excel (Mac) opened it without a problem. The error message appeared as soon as I chose the file in the CSV Importer panel. A pop up window said it could not parse the file. I believe this should be repeatable by another user.
Thanks for your report. This will be fixed for gnucash 3.2 Meanwhile you can work around it by changing the backslash in your csv file with a double backslash \ -> \\
