Cuurently the clear button uses the edit-clear-symbolic icon from the icon theme, which might be confusing to some users [1].
Also, most calculators (physical) use C or CE, which is also reflected in the new designs [2]. 
The UI should be updated to use C instead of edit-clear-symbolic.

This problem has been fixed in the unstable development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. You may need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain that newer version.
