Description gQuigs 2018-01-09 15:17:19 UTC
My thought is that a lot of backlash from the removal of a classic "desktop" is due to the empty unusable space that loads every time you login to your session.

I'd propose defaulting to the app launcher instead. That would also result in most users reducing one click on login.

I believe most users who really want a desktop would find this fine.

This has been discussed countless times over the years ... (also somehow related, we used to switch to the overview automatically when the active workspace became empty, but it was deemed more confusing than helpful)

We briefly discussed this in today's Ubuntu Desktop meeting. It seemed there was support from Ubuntu Desktop Developers for dropping traditional "icons on the desktop" if the Activities Overview were re-implemented to *be* the desktop.

I guess it would be an "Activities Underview" then!

That sounds similar to what Endless is doing, which we discussed in light of future overview plans at the UX hackfest - it's not what we will pursue upstream, but you may be able to share the feature with Endless OS.
