Description J.R. Maingat 2017-12-24 08:02:35 UTC
I primarily use my keyboard to navigate my system and AFAIK the only shortcut to close Geary (w/o killing the background process) is Alt-F4.

I'd rather use Ctrl-w/Escape as it's much easier to type.

Hi there, thanks for the bug report.

Geary sometimes takes a while to exit when Geary > Quit is activated or the main window is closed — sometimes up to 20 seconds, and if you have the "Always watch for new mail" preference selected, it will never exit and always keep running in the background.

If clicking the [X] button, choosing Quit, pressing Alt-F4 or Ctrl-Q does not make the geary process exit within a few seconds, you may be hitting Bug 745561. Is that the case?
Comment 2 J.R. Maingat 2018-01-06 06:06:18 UTC
Hi, I have the "Always watch for new mail" preference selected. Ctrl-Q closes Geary but kills the background process as well.

All I would like is to use Ctrl-w/Escape as an shortcut to close Geary and keep it running in the background.
Comment 3 Michael Gratton 2018-01-06 07:31:13 UTC
Oh, that's weird - it should remain in the background in either case. You're running 0.12, right? Did you install from source, distro package or flatpak?
Comment 4 J.R. Maingat 2018-01-06 22:17:03 UTC
I'm on Xubuntu 17.10 running 0.12.0-0ubuntu1 from ubuntu-artful-universe.
Comment 5 Michael Gratton 2018-01-15 22:56:58 UTC
Okay, well I'm going to mark this as depending on Bug 792406 then because that's where we're probably going to be thinking about this.
Comment 6 Michael Gratton 2019-10-24 04:47:04 UTC
This has been fixed in 3.34. There is now a Ctrl+W shortcut that, when the "Watch for new mail when closed" pref is enabled, will keep Geary running in the background.
